Okoroire

The Okoroire Hotel is a beautiful country pub built in the 1880s from native timber. It is nestled on 80 acres of park-like surroundings on the banks of the Waihou River and has been owned by the same family for three generations.

Okoroire lies in the heart of the Waikato, no more than 40 minutes to Tauranga, Hamilton and Rotorua. Auckland airport is 90 minutes drive time away and Taupō is 70 minutes drive to the south.

Okororie is home to a host of activities for the whole family. Whitewater rafting, a 'must do' New Zealand experience, is just a short drive from the hotel on the road to Tauranga. Here, at the McClaren Falls lake, you will find the base for 'Water Rats' and their Te Waihou River whitewater rafting - a thrilling Grade 5 experience!

For the more sedate, visitors can enjoy the riverside beauty with a fishing rod and reel, the sounds of the river and the sound of bird calls. Okoroire has a rich fishing history. It was here that rainbow trout were first released into the Waihou River around 1889. The Waikato and bordering Bay of Plenty regions are a myriad of river systems, dams, hydro lakes and hundreds of tributaries. These include the mighty Waikato River System and its hydro lakes, Te Waihou river system, the Kaituna, McClaren Falls lake and many others.

There are a number of beautiful walking tracks in and around Okoroire. The Three Kāuri Tree walk is only a five minute drive from the hotel. Another must for avid nature lovers is the Wairere Falls walk. These walks journey through New Zealand 's southern-most kāuri forests and are rich in native plants and flowers.

Another walk worth doing while you are in the area is Te Waihou Walkway just outside Putāruru. Te Waihou covers a distance of 4.7km with an average walking time of 1.5 hours each way. Visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of the Waikato farm lands, the clarity of the Waihou River and the crystal clear Blue Springs, from which 70% of New Zealand's bottled water is sourced.
