Council owns numerous community halls
in Tokoroa, Tīrau, Arapuni, Puketurua, Waotu, Tapapa and Upper Atiamuri. All
halls are managed by their Hall Management Committee. Council is responsible
for the hall maintenance and the committee manages the day to day
administration along with bookings and payments.
Council also owns The Plaza in
Putāruru. This is a district facility and is managed through the South Waikato
Arts Trust. The trust has worked extremely hard to fundraise and oversee the
redevelopment of The Plaza to the modern facility residents can enjoy today.
The Plaza is the flagship centre for
the performing arts and cultural activities in the district, but also functions
as a gathering place for the local community. The Plaza hosts a diverse range
of events, from The New Zealand Ballet and Opera to movies and local dance
competitions. There is no other facility like this in the South Waikato, with
its 520 seating capacity, nine bar fly tower and spacious stage areas.
