South Waikato District Council provides 84 Community housing units. These units are located in Tīrau, Putaruru and Tokoroa. Most are one bedroom units but there are some two bedroom units available. Each unit has its own kitchen, bathroom and laundry facility. All units are fitted with smoke alarms.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicant(s) must meet all of the criteria within a category
CATEGORY A
- A single applicant must be 65 years of
age or older (being the age eligible for New Zealand superannuation in New
Zealand). For a couple, one of the applicants must be sixty-five years of age
or older and the partner must be sixty years or older.
- For all applicants their only source of taxable
income can be from:
- New Zealand or Overseas Superannuation
- War Disablement Pension
- New Zealand Veterans Pension; and
- The combined value of the applicant’s assets
which include cash in the bank, shares, trusts, investments, or any other
property of value (excluding furniture, a car or motorbike, personal effects
and ownership of Maori land) must not exceed the following figures below:
- Single Person: $20,000
- Couple: $30,000; and
- All applicants must not have owned a home in the
past five years; and
- Applicants must have been a resident in the
South Waikato District for at least five years.
CATEGORY B
- A
single applicant must be sixty-five years of age or older (being the age
eligible for New Zealand superannuation in New Zealand). For a couple one of
the applicants must be sixty-five years of age or older and the partner must be
sixty years or older.
- A
maximum taxable income of $5,000 in current or previous tax year except for
income from:
- New Zealand or Overseas Superannuation
- War Disablement Pension
- New Zealand Veterans Pension; and
- The
combined value of the applicant’s assets which include cash in the bank,
shares, trusts, investments, or any other property of value (excluding
furniture, a car or motorbike, personal effects and ownership of Maori land
must not exceed the following figures below:
- Single Person: $20,000
- Couple: $30,000; and
- All
applicants must not have owned a home in the past five years; and
- Applicants
must have been a resident in the South Waikato District for at least three
years.
CATEGORY C
- A single applicant must be sixty years of age or older. For a couple both applicants must be sixty years of age or older.
- A maximum taxable income of $5,000 in current or previous tax year except for income from:
- New Zealand or Overseas Superannuation
- War Disablement Pension
- New Zealand Veterans Pension; and
- The combined value of the applicant’s assets which include cash in the bank, shares, trusts, investments, or any other property of value (excluding furniture, a car or motorbike, personal effects and ownership of Maori land must not exceed the following figures below:
- Single Person: $20,000
- Couple: $30,000; and
- Applicants must have been a resident in the South Waikato District for at least one year.
