The Chorus Cabinet Art Programme is returning to South Waikato in partnership with South Waikato District Council and submissions are now open for designs.
Four cabinets, two in Tokoroa and one each in Arapuni and Putaruru, have been chosen for beautification and artists are encouraged to get their designs in.
The project, which sees some of their more frequently tagged cabinets painted in art works, has been very successful so Chorus has continued its partnership with South Waikato District Council to extend its reach further.
Chorus Community Relations Manager Jo Seddon says that it makes sense to partner with local councils, as they have the same goal in mind to discourage graffiti vandalism.
“It is great to work with local councils when it comes to choosing cabinets and designs as they know their communities best,” she says.
“Once again South Waikato District Council has nominated the four cabinets and we’re really looking forward to seeing what local artists come up with.”
These cabinets become works of art in the street, often telling stories about the communities in which they are located, and help to discourage tagging.
Mayor Jenny Shattock says, “This is a fantastic initiative by Chorus and as Mayor of the South Waikato I am very pleased to welcome back the programme this year.
“Tagging in our towns does nothing for our image nor Council’s goal to attract more people to live, work and play here. This initiative helps to curb some of that behaviour.
“Improving the appearance of our towns shows the pride we have in our home and environment and adds to our appeal in attracting visitors and new residents.”
Council’s Community Programme Co-ordinator Rangimarie Smith will be co-ordinating designs and artists again and is looking forward to seeing the designs that come through this year.
“This project is a great opportunity for our community. Not only do we get fantastic art works in our streetscape, but also it provides work and promotion of our local artists,” she said.
Requests for designs are now open and the winning design for each cabinet will be chosen from entries received.
