Released: Friday 25 March 2022
Council is calling for Expression of Interests from established local community groups and organisations for the purchase of the old Countdown building in Tokoroa.
Expressions of Interest close at 1pm on Friday 29 April. Information/application packs can be collected from the Council offices.
This land and building were gifted to Council by Mrs Bonnie Pelikan for Council to use the building for a new library or if unsuitable, to sell the property with the proceeds going to a future library/hub.
“Selling the property for community use and putting the money towards a new community facility is a great outcome for the community,” said Mayor Jenny Shattock. “We have liaised with Mrs Pelikan on the sale. Calling for Expressions of Interest from established community groups to purchase the property means that not only will the building and land be used for community good, but the proceeds from the sale will too.”
“Staff are currently investigating two potential options, working with building surveyors and design experts. Once we’re at a stage where we have some concrete costed options, we will come back out to the community,” said Ross Provan, Council’s Project Manager.
“Results of a user survey done early 2021 are feeding into the project. Taking existing community feedback into consideration during this early planning stage will ensure we deliver on users’ aspirations for what they want a future-focussed library to provide for current and future population.”
