SWDC welcomes interim CE Miriam Taris
Released: Thursday 20 January 2022
South Waikato District Council is pleased to welcome Miriam Taris on board as interim Chief Executive for a three-month period. Miriam will take over from outgoing CE Ben Smit, while SWDC’s recruitment process for a new permanent CE is underway.
Miriam recently left Bay of Plenty District Council after 14 years in local government, seven years as Chief Executive and prior to that role, seven years as Corporate Group Manager, responsible for corporate services and planning.
Miriam has a background as a scientist and accountant; and has previously worked for the Office of the Auditor General as an auditor for public entities, including local councils.
“Miriam’s experience with local government and her understanding of the sector will be valuable over the coming months,” said Mayor Jenny Shattock. “We needed someone to take the helm for a short period and Miriam wished to take on short term contract roles, so the timing worked out well.”
“When Mayor Jenny called about this temporary role, it sounded ideal for me,” said Miriam.
“South Waikato District Council has a good reputation in the sector, and I am looking forward to working with Mayor Shattock, Councillors, staff and the South Waikato community over the coming months,” continued Miriam. “I will be starting in early February to see through a handover period with Ben.”
Mr Smit’s last day will be Friday 11 February 2022, before he takes on the role of Chief Executive for Waitomo District Council. Mr Smit has been with SWDC for 12 years.
The CE recruitment process is being conducted through Jackson Stone Recruitment Agency. Applications for the permanent CE role close on Wednesday 26 January.
