Regular visitors to Lake Moananui in Tokoroa will notice a visible difference over the coming weeks with work to remove silt set to begin from Monday 10 February.
The silt removal project, which takes place every three years is essential to help maintain water depths in the lake.
“The accumulation of silt in the lake is a naturally occurring part of the lake’s lifecycle,” Project Manager Tamihana Coxhead said.
“This project is necessary to allow the stream to continue flowing through the lake and maintain its healthy ecosystem.”
The four-phase project will start with the lowering of the lake next week. The next step is to let the area dry out. Once dry, Council's contractors will remove the silt from the basin and relocate it for shaping.
While the lake is empty and drying out, Council will take the opportunity to clean up any litter in the lake bed. Upon completion of the silt removal, Council will begin the process of raising the lake again.
“As public safety is our main priority, the path and footbridge at the southern end of the lake may be inaccessible to the public while works are being carried out on the lake,” Mr Coxhead added.
The targeted date of completion for this project is March 16. However, these dates are dependent on weather conditions. The public will be informed of any changes on the Council Facebook page or through the Council app Antenno.
