South Waikato Jim Higgins Memorial Walkway unveiled

Friends and family gathered at Lake Moananui in Tokoroa on Saturday 3 September to unveil the Jim Higgins Memorial Walkway plaque.

The late Jim Higgins was Tokoroa's first ever Mayor, serving on the Tokoroa County Borough from 1966 to 1975 and then the Tokoroa Borough Council from 1975 to 1980.

"Looking today at our beautiful Lake Moananui and the walkway, we couldn't think of a more fitting way or spot to recognise Jim's commitment to developing beautiful parks for our district," said Neil Sinclair at the unveiling.

Eldest son, Colin Higgins spoke on behalf of the family saying it was humbling to see so many people celebrate the naming of the popular Lake Moananui walkway in remembrance of his father.

"It was my father's passion for parks and reserves that got him involved in local body politics from the start," he said. "Working with other like-minded people who shared this vision has meant that Tokoroa has some fantastic parks that celebrate our proximity to recreational, sporting and outdoor opportunities."

"These recreational areas are a legacy for us all to look after for future generations to enjoy," he continued.

The late Mr Higgins' wife Nanette unveiled the plaque surrounded by family and friends.

The plaque is inlaid into the popular walkway in memory of Mr Higgins' dedication and commitment to developing parks and reserves for the enjoyment of our communities. It is located near the picnic tables at the Maraetai Road parking lot side of the lake.
