The Logan Street skate park is once again looking like its former vibrant self, thanks to the volunteer efforts of a South Waikato business.
The park has been tidied up, water blasted and repainted.
"It looks awesome," commented local skateboard enthusiast, Evan Dickenson. "The skate park is a popular place for locals to get together and we're so grateful to the business who put in their own time just to make it more enjoyable for us."
The skate park was installed in 1998 and will be celebrating its 16th anniversary this December.
Council will be discussing the future of the skate park in the up and coming Long Term Plan (LTP), as we feel this important facility will soon reach the end of its useful life and as times change, the types of structures that youth want to see in the skate park have also changed.
Because of this Council has some money set aside to be spend on upgrading this facility between the years 2016-22. Two options for the future of the skate park have been suggested by Council - to upgrade the park at its current location or relocate it to the Tokoroa Memorial Sportsground.
There are advantages to both of these options and Council is keen to hear your thoughts. The LTP is open for consultation in March/April of 2015, so make sure you have your say.
Any changes that are to happen with the skate park are still a few years away, so the recent repaint was not in vain.
"It was a great contribution to the community," said Community Group Manager, Amanda Hema. "The park is still used frequently and it was in need of a tidy up. Council appreciates the time and money dedicated to this project, it's local businesses that help keep our community spirit alive."
Council has also been in contact with contractors to remove the waste that has been dumped near the skate park at the earliest convenience.
"The site had been used in the past as a temporary storage site for metal, concrete and earth waste," Assets Deputy GM Gordon Naidoo. "However this is not its intended purpose, so the site will be cleared of all waste, which will help with the overall tidiness of the skate park."
Council is installing signage warning against dumping and if you see anyone dumping here in the future please report it to Council.
