Her Worship the Mayor Jenny Shattock is proud to announce that the 2018 Mayoral Scholarship fund is open for applications - and this year there is an exciting change.
"Council has made the decision to split the scholarship down the middle so we can provide financial support to not one, but two worthy students," commented Mayor Shattock. "The judging panel has often found it hard in the past to choose just one recipient when the calibre of student applicants is always outstanding, so to be able to award two scholarships feels like a positive change for this fund."
The Mayoral Scholarship now offers two grants to the value of $10,000 ($2,500 per year for up to four years for each recipient). If you are 21 or under, live in the South Waikato and are planning a Degree course of study next year, you are eligible to apply.
"We have once before, awarded this scholarship to two students in one year," said Christine Beach, Council's Human Resources Manager. "In 2015 Chloe Tupou-Fairoa Herman and Cameron Pearce both received an equal share of the $20,000 fund as they were both outstanding candidates. We're excited to be make this a permanent change for the Mayoral Scholarship."
If you are interested in applying for the Mayoral Scholarship, make sure you submit your form by Wednesday 25 October. Applicants must have NZQA-approved University entrance qualifications, have appropriate references, show evidence of extra-curricular activities and have South Waikato residency.
On completion of study, depending on the job vacancies at Council, the Scholarship recipient may be offered employment. If such an offer is made, the person would be expected to accept the offer.
Initial enquiries should be made to the Human Resources Manager or click here. The successful applicant will be announced at the beginning of November.
"The Mayoral Scholarship was first introduced in 2006, and so far it has helped a number of young people study towards their chosen career," continued Mayor Shattock. "We are proud to continue to support our local youth through this fund and look forward to receiving applications from our talented South Waikato students."
