Mayor Jenny Shattock has taken a stand against violence towards women by signing the White Ribbon Pledge, with full support from her councillors and council staff.
White Ribbon is an international movement where people, particularly men, wear a white ribbon to show they don't condone or tolerate violence towards women.
The White Ribbon Pledge asks that you "stand up, speak out and act to prevent men's violence towards women".
"We are proud to see the many men and whānau in our community standing up in support of the White Ribbon," commented Mayor Jenny. "Council stands strong alongside you, sending aroha to the women, men and children who have been affected by violence against women. Together our community can move towards a future without it."
Today on White Ribbon Day, the Tokoroa Council of Social Services (TCOSS), with help from Council and other community groups, were out raising awareness for the White Ribbon Movement.
"It was a very successful day, we were pleased to see so many people taking the time to stop and learn about White Ribbon," commented Josiah Teokotai, Manager of TCOSS. "Together with a number of local influential leaders we have established Tu Ki Runga Tokoroa, and we look forward to creating a coordinated approach to end violence against women and family violence in our communities."
