Council CE contract extended

South Waikato District Council's Chief Executive's contract has been extended for two years, from May next year, through to May 2020.

Chief Executive Craig Hobbs took on the role in May 2013 and admits it is his most challenging role ever.

"The complexities working in local government are huge," he said. "This role is both rewarding and challenging. I am very proud of the team working for Council. All staff here work very hard delivering services to our community.

"It is a privilege to work for such a progressive Council. There are changing times ahead as our district moves into a period of growth," he continued. "I am very pleased that Council has the confidence in my leadership and efforts to give me the opportunity to continue at the helm until 2020."

"We are looking forward to Mr Hobbs leading us through the exciting growth times ahead," said Mayor Shattock.

"There's much to be done," continued Mayor Shattock. "For many years our Council has worked through periods of consolidation with little growth, but all that is changing. Our Council is working hard to facilitate new business opportunities to create more jobs for our people. Several exciting projects across the district like the Putāruru re-zone project, Leith Place and Tīrau Walkway will all make significant strides over the coming months and years."

Under legislation Chief Executives in local authorities are employed on fixed term contracts up to a maximum of five years. This term can be extended for another two years following a formal performance review. After seven years, the council must go back to the market and the role advertised. The incumbent can re-apply.
