Te Waihou Walkway Leslie Road track to open for summer
The Blue Spring / Te Waihou Walkway Leslie Road entrance will re-open on Thursday 5 December 2024 following major works completed over the past 12 months. The Blue Spring, known for its crystal-clear waters, will officially open to the public following a blessing/karakia by South Waikato District’s mana whenua, Raukawa.
The Track has been closed since November last year due to a rockfall which blocked off access to the Spring from the Leslie Road end. This subsequently caused significant traffic management issues at the Whites Road end. Work will continue at the Whites Road end where Council is strengthening the boardwalk. Council expects the full Walkway to be open early next year, giving visitors access from both ends of the Track.
Nick Murphy, Council’s Executive Manager Delivery stated, “We’re excited to offer access once again to this treasured natural spot. Through the Long Term Plan, the Council had budgeted to spend $2.1 million for track renewal at Te Waihou over the first three years. Council intends carrying out all the necessary work now and once completed, we would have caught up on the outstanding maintenance of many years. Barring unforeseen events, it shouldn’t need shutting for the foreseeable future.”
Murphy cautioned the public to steer clear from parts of the Track that are not open yet. “Construction work is ongoing on the Whites Road end of the Walkway where Council is strengthening the existing boardwalk. These parts of the Track are closed because of the poor condition and unsafe nature of the various structures such as boardwalks, stairs and retaining walls along the length of the Track. Signage and worksite fencing is in place,” he said.
