South Waikato Deputy Mayor Bill Machen announced at yesterday’s Council meeting that he would be stepping down from the role.
“I have greatly enjoyed my time as Deputy Mayor and sincerely thank ex-Mayor Jenny Shattock and current Mayor Gary Petley for the opportunity to serve the district and community in this role” said Councillor Machen. “I have valued the opportunities to represent our District within the greater Waikato region and at national events.”
Councillor Machen is looking forward to serving the rest of this term with the same dedication and enthusiasm that our community has come to expect from him.
“I want to thank the many people in the community who have supported me on my local government journey, especially in my capacity as Deputy,” continued Councillor Machen.
Tokoroa Ward Councillor Hamish Daine has accepted Mayor Petley’s appointment to take on the role of Deputy Mayor. The official handover will be at the end of February.
“There is a good 18 months to go until the next local body election and this will provide opportunity and time for Councillor Daine to grow into the role and gain the necessary knowledge and experience to support the role of the Mayor,” said Mayor Petley.
Mayor Petley expressed his thanks to Councillor Machen for his dedication to the role and community and especially for his support in his first term as Mayor.
“Bill’s support has been unwavering and it has been greatly appreciated,” said Mayor Petley. “I also take the opportunity to welcome Councillor Daine to the role.”
