Lake Moana nui dam closed for safety reasons
Late last year it was noted that there was a slightly damaged section of concrete on the face and water was leaking through the dam wall at Lake Moana nui. Council has had this assessed by experts and we are awaiting a full report so that we can decide on the best course of action.
In the meantime, Council has closed access to the dam wall itself and encourage people to not walk across or stand on the wall, or picnic below the dam. We have also lowered the level of the lake again to avoid undue pressure on the wall.
"Council and the experts are not overly concerned that the dam will break, however we are playing it safe and advise people to steer clear of the area," said Roger Fisher, Council's Group Manager Assets. "Unfortunately the lake will not look its best with the lower water levels and there is likely to be a smell nuisance initially as the vegetation around the edge dies off."
Council will have a better idea of what is required once the full report is available at the end of January and we will keep the public informed.
Staff are monitoring the condition of the dam. Ends: words: 203
