Roading activity contractors
Council has four main contractors as part of the roading activity.
Downer (Tīrau)
Downer is Council's road maintenance contractor. They carryout routine maintenance activities on the district's local roads, such as repairing potholes, damaged seals, road surfaces, shoulders, un-sealed pavements, road-side drainage, culverts, vegetation control, spraying, sweeping, footpaths and kerb and channel. In emergency situations, they respond to roadside flooding, slips, tree falls, stream cleaning, etc. They also work on road safety issues, such as repairing/ replacing damaged guard rails, site rails, etc.
Besides the above works, Downer also work on the capital works involving road improvements, rehabilitation's, or minor improvements such as intersections, sight safety and improving driving conditions.
Higgins
Higgins is Council's reseal contractor. Their main area of work is site reseals which are usually carried in the summer construction season. Higgins is also responsible for laying asphaltic concrete (more commonly known as A/C) in the CBD areas and Council managed carparks.
Directionz
Directionz is responsible for any road side signage in the South Waikato District. This includes all regulatory signage such as stop signs, give way signs and speed limit signage. As well as replacing broken or missing signs, Directionz is also responsible for the maintenance of signage in the district.
Road Runners
Road Runners is responsible for the road marking in the South Waikato District. All road markings (ie centrelines, edge lines limit lines etc) are remarked every year in November (subject to weather). Rural roads that receive heavier use also receive another re-mark prior to winter.
