Thinking of buying a portable or inflatable pop-up pool?

With summer now officially upon us, plenty of people in the South Waikato will be starting to think about buying a pool to cool down through the warmer months.

It’s important to know your responsibilities if you have a pool on the property you own or reside in.

Homeowners, tenants, landlords and property managers all carry joint responsibility for pool safety.

Any portable or inflatable pool that can hold 400mm (40cm) depth of water or more is required to have a barrier by law.

Owners or occupiers are also responsible for maintaining the barriers, fences, self-closing gates and latches and ensuring they are working correctly.

The leading causes of children five and younger drowning or being injured in pools are:

  • unsupervised access to pools through faulty gates and barriers
  • ladders left against the pool and gates propped open
  • small portable pools remaining full of water without supervision or a complying barrier

“This is such an important issue; being on top of pool safety saves lives,” South Waikato District Council Animal and Compliance Manager Kerry Beckett said.

“No body of water is safe, particularly around our tamariki.

“Council is available to answer any questions you might have on this topic, so please get in touch.”
