A $17m upgrade project at the South Waikato Indoor Pools will commence in February, beginning the journey towards the District gaining a much-improved facility which will be fit for purpose long term.
Signalled in the District’s Long Term Plan for 2024-34, the essential works are required to future-proof the facility, which the community risked losing if work wasn’t committed to.
The project will take between 12-15 months to be completed, during which time the pool will be closed. A temporary pop-up small pool option, located at the South Waikato Sport and Events Centre in Tokoroa, will offer limited services for the community such as learn to swim classes, water safety for schools, early morning swims and rehabilitation sessions.
Among the planned works, is the installation of non-slip flooring in and outside the pools, the addition of new changing rooms suitable for families, those with physical disabilities and the elderly, along with a new splash pad for family fun, a new sauna and plunge pool.
A community room will also be available to hire for events and parties. The outside will have a face-lift and new outside play area.
