Mayoral statement: Tīrau Cemetery

Statement from South Waikato District Mayor Gary Petley

It’s been brought to my attention that there have recently been instances of disturbances and desecrations to headstones at the Tīrau Cemetery.

Behaviour of this type is unacceptable and goes against the values that our community is built on.

Those laid to rest in these areas deserve to remain undisturbed and their whānau deserve to be able to visit these places of remembrance without worrying about them being damaged or disrespected.
