On Wednesday 25 January the South Waikato District Libraries hosted their annual finale party to celebrate the participants who completed the Summer Reading Programme of 2016/17.
A massive 141 South Waikato children between the ages of 4 and 11 successfully completed this summer's programme.
"It's fantastic to see so many children across our district interested in reading and taking part in the Summer Reading Programme. We are very proud of each and every child and their achievements over the summer," commented Lalita Sudhakar, Tokoroa Library Manager.
Throughout the course of the programme children must report into a librarian four times to discuss the books they have read. There are incentives and prizes to be earned along the way, and at the end of the programme a finale party is held for the participants.
Her Worship the Mayor Jenny Shattock, and Community Group Manager Sam Marshall attended the party to hand out certificates, medals and prizes, as well as offer our young readers encouragement to keep up their reading efforts into the future.
Pete the Pirate provided party entertainment, educating his young charges the way of ruthless and fearsome pirates.
Barbara Taylor and Catherine Groos of the Tokoroa City Lions Club, and Lola McCormack and Anne Hughes from the Putāruru Lions Club were also in attendance.
"We are incredibly grateful to both these clubs for their sponsorship and involvement in the Summer Reading Programme," said Lalita Sudhakar.
