Open drains in Tokoroa not a dumping site
Open drains all around Tokoroa are being abused by residents throwing their refuse into them.
As a result of this abuse, many of the drains are no longer functioning as they should.
Open drains need to work properly to ensure that properties do not get flooded.
"We've found items such as couches, large plastic containers, buckets and garden cuttings biffed into the drains," said Council's Services Manager Andrew Pascoe, "This illegal dumping is causing damage to our drains and needs to be stopped."
"It's not only the larger refuse that's causing problems though; it's the smaller things such as cigarette butts and food wrappers too."
All drains flow into the storm water pipes which discharge into streams and rivers and eventually into the sea where aquatic life is affected by this waste.
"Council needs to have this rubble removed from the open drains so they operate effectively, which unfortunately costs the rate payer money."
Reserves and drains are not tipping areas, if you witness any illegal dumping call Council on (07) 885 0340.
Council will investigate and if any of the rubbish found is identifiable the perpetrators will be prosecuted.
